MINNEAPOLIS PARK POLICE
Mounted Patrol Unit
The Minneapolis Park Police Mounted Patrol Unit was
formed in the spring of 1996 with one supervisor and two officers riding
three donated horses. Today, the Mounted Patrol Unit has grown to a
supervisor and a total of nine trained riders. There are now seven horses
(five donated and two purchased).
The horses are stabled and trained at the Shrine Stable
near Delano, MN and transported to Minneapolis for routine patrol and for
special events such as parades, community/park celebrations, and crowd
control including assistance to the MPD Downtown Command.
City-wide patrol patterns are determined by the needs
of the five Park Police Teams and appearances at special events are
handled on a first come, first served basis. In 1999, the Minneapolis Park
Police Mounted Patrol Unit made over 200 special appearances.
For the 2000 season, the Mounted Patrol Unit will be
training and working jointly with the MPD Downtown Command Mounted Patrol
Unit and the Hennepin County Park Mounted Patrol Unit.
